Nationwide offers home insurance "education" to uni parents - 11/09/2007

Home insurance provider Nationwide has reassured worried parents that they can easily cover their children's possessions as they go off to university over then next few weeks.
The insurance experts say that customers' pre-existing home insurance policies might well cover prospective students' possessions, but that it would be well worthwhile for parents to check their policies. Furthermore, Nationwide says that parents who have one of their own home insurance policies will already be automatically covering any thefts from their children while they are on campus.
Alternatively, separate student policies - offered by many home insurance firms - can be taken out by concerned parents.
Robin Bailey, Nationwides insurance director, said: "With the cost of tuition fees, accommodation fees and books to pay for, university is without doubt a very expensive experience for both students and parents. As a result, many parents may overlook the importance of their child having home insurance while away at university and take the risk that they will never need to make a claim.
"However, with expensive items such as iPods, computers, televisions, games consoles and stereos, student homes have become a prime target for burglars," he claimed.
Mr Bailey added: "Parents may be unaware that their childs contents could be covered under their own home insurance policy and therefore may not need to take out additional cover while they are living at university."
