Security systems 'lower premiums', Biba says - 19/09/2007

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has said that installing home security measures such as burglar alarms and strong locks generally lowers home insurance premiums.
Biba's comments come in the wake of research from the National Security Inspectorate, which suggested that one-in-five of house thefts in the UK were caused by windows and doors being left unlocked.
However, technical services manager at the association Graeme Trudgill counselled that there were only certain types of locks which would be approved by home insurance providers.
"If you go to your insurance broker they will tell you which alarms or mortise locks or window locks qualify you for discounts," he said.
"Certain alarms will also qualify you for a discount
The key thing is to get your broker to tell you which systems you get the discount for - which are approved by which insurance company.
"They're not all approved by any means."
Mr Trudgill also advised that insurers would "insist" that all security systems be professionally installed.
The most recent statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show that there are almost 10,000 written home insurance products available to consumers in the UK.
