NUS points out university financial strain - 24/09/2007

Britain's students are being forced to work because "they don't have enough money for essentials", a National Union of Students (NUS) spokesperson has said.
Furthermore, on leaving university, young Britons are being "hit with quite hefty payback" in the form of student debt.
"Debt is vastly unhelpful," the spokesperson warned, "and to get into a culture of debt so early on is not going to do the student any good".
Statistics show that students as a whole face debts of £3.2 billion on graduation - an increase of 167 per cent over the past decade.
Moreover, in the past year, more than 4,000 borrowers from the Student Loans Company have declared themselves bankrupt, the Independent reports.
Nevertheless, despite the financial strain the importance of students in the UK taking out home insurance has been highlighted by the problem of theft on campuses.
Earlier this month, Direct Line Home Insurance released research showing that a total of £18.7 million worth of bikes are stolen from students in Britain each year.
"With so many students at risk of having their bike stolen, we would strongly advise them to either take out their own insurance," head of home insurance at Direct Line Andrew Lowe commented.
