Home insurance provider NFU Mutual has revealed that many customers are unknowingly underinsured through failing to regularly review their cover.
Research released by the firm even shows that almost one quarter of home insurance holders have never reviewed their contents cover - and that 18 per cent say they simply do not know that checking the insurance regularly is strongly advisable.
Differences across Britain's regions in levels of home insurance responsibility were also found by NFU Mutual: while 30 per cent of Londoners have opted out of the cover completely, 88 per cent of those in the south-west have taken out the insurance.
Speaking for the insurance company, Laura Wood said that checking home insurance "does not need to be an arduous process".
She added: "Good times to review your level of cover could be when you make a large purchase, move house, begin living with someone or after a milestone event like a wedding."
The firm's research showed that, region by region, those in the north-east were least likely to check their home insurance cover regularly (with just 28 per cent doing so) - while their north-west neighbours were most likely to do so on 78 per cent.
