Students are making life easy for thieves - which might lead them to claim on home insurance more than is necessary - the government says.
According to the Home Office, one in three students will be a victim of crime each year - with criminal 'hotspots' developing in the late summer around campuses as the new academic year begins.
The BBC reports that burglaries more than double from August to October in the student-heavy LS6 postcode in Leeds, for example.
Robberies also increase four-fold in that period - provoking the West Yorkshire Police to launch a major new anti-theft campaign aimed at young academics.
New gadgets such as iPods and laptops bought in preparation for the new term make students particularly attractive targets, police say.
Local community support officer John Linley told the broadcaster that "simple" and "practical" steps should be taken to help cut down the crime rate.
Windows and doors should be shut and locked, home insurance policies should be taken out and valuables must be kept out of sight, he said.
Currently, over 400,000 students are enrolled in UK universities.
