L&G's student plea - 04/10/2007
|
Home insurance provider Legal & General (L&G) has issued security tips to students in a bid to keep claims down - and the young academics' personal safety intact.
The advice comes in the wake of a government survey in July, which showed that in homes where no security measures had been taken, almost one in four were ten times more likely to have suffered a burglary.
Home Office research also revealed that student homes - which generally have lax security and have a high quantity of expensive gadgets such as laptop computers and mp3 players - are two-and-a-half times more likely to be broken into than the national average.
Head of planning and insight at the home insurance provider Andy Dellbridge commented: "We would recommend that any students, particularly those going to university for the first time, carry out these checks to reduce the risk of them being a victim of robbery or theft.
"As a warning their insurance cover is unlikely to be valid if a window or door is found to have been left open so they should always ensure they lock their doors and windows."
Security tips from L&G include insuring that window locks are fitted, checking that room doors can be locked and trying to make access to gardens secure.
