Storms caused £4.5 billion worth of roof damage last year, according to a new survey.
Halifax Home Insurance revealed that bad weather has affected 1.5 million homes - costing the average homeowner £2,800 or 12 per cent of the average salary.
Despite this, many Brits are still failing to properly insure their properties.
“Homeowners without adequate buildings insurance cover risk finding a huge hole blown in their finances by the cost of repairs,” said Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax.
”Increasing incidents of extreme weather conditions, such as wind and flood, make it more vital than ever for homeowners to take proactive steps to protect their financial and physical security before disaster strikes.”
Halifax said that sheds and outbuildings were most likely to be damage by falling roof tiles, followed by cars and garden furniture.
