A Mediterranean-style diet of oily fish and fresh vegetables can cut dementia rates, a major new study which could impact upon the life insurance industry has revealed.
Not only are deaths from dementia-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease a source of payouts from term life insurance policies, but many of the diseases are also paid out for by critical illness life insurance cover.
Scientists publishing their findings in the latest edition of the journal Neurology also say that beta-carotene supplements can have the same effect, the BBC reports.
Project leader Dr Pascale Barberger-Gateau, from the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research, said: "These results could have considerable implications for public health."
The source of the health benefits is believed to be found in the anti-oxidants found in fish and vegeables.
Beta-carotene itself, as its name might suggest, is the chemical which gives carrots their colour.
Speaking to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Alzheimer's Society commented: "The majority of the population can reduce their risk by eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit and fish."
