Cancer 'wonder drug' to be prescribed on NHS - 15/11/2007

A new cancer 'wonder drug' has been given clearance to be offered on the NHS, in news which could significantly affect life insurance policies in the UK.
Approximately one in three Britons will contract cancer in their lifetime - and approximately one in four will die of the disease.
As such, cancer is one of the biggest single reasons for term life insurance payouts.
What's more, the disease is covered by most critical illness life insurance policies.
The new drug is known as Tarceva or Erlotinib, and targets lung cancer sufferers - and was previously only available in Britain to those patients who could afford to go private.
At the moment, hospitals in the north-east and Cumbria are the only centres in the UK which will routinely prescribe the drug to sufferers.
Speaking to the Chronicle, cancer patient Jimmy Jenkyns had high praise for the drug, which he has been previously paying for before battling the NHS to get it for free.
"It's been a wonder drug for me," he said.
