A survey by a financial firm has exposed the level of debt that is targeting the UK.
The study showed alarmingly that one in four people are hiding debts from their family and friends.
Around 24% of consumers stated that they had overdraft, loan or credit card debts that they hid from their loved ones. The average person owes £4,096.
One in five people said they hid their debt because it had got out of control, and 14% admitted they simply did not realise how much debt they had.
One third of people said they hid their debt because they were embarrassed about it, while 23% said they worried about how their friends or family would react.
Alison Green, spokeswoman for the firm said: “There are over 12 million people in the UK today hiding their debt and financial concerns from their partners and family. Be that through embarrassment, fear or, in some cases, ignorance.
“The important thing is for people to take control of their finances and get the help and the support they need. The first step of which is taking stock of their debt and sharing this with the people in their lives.”
