A new study has suggested that Middle class families in London and the south-east of England have accumulated as much as £50,000 in debt, on average, making them the largest debtors in the country.
Those living in affluent areas, the survey from credit agency Experian found, have borrowed four times as much as people from the north-west of England and Scotland.
Using records of people’s debts on mortgages, personal loans, overdrafts, store and credit cards and hire purchase agreements, the credit agency was able to calculate how much debt has been run up in each of the 286 postal code regions.
Richmond (Surrey), Putney (London), Kingston-upon Thames (Surrey), etc were listed among regions with the most indebted families.
With this revelation it is now clear that middle class families are now feeling the impact of their borrowing habits, claimed Credit Action’s Keith Tondeur.
“Over the past 15 years middle England has had it good but now they are feeling the squeeze…Worryingly it is going to get worse before it gets better,” he said.
