Brits 'financially overweight' - 12/03/2008
|
Nearly half of all UK adults (46 per cent) are "financially overweight", with over ten per cent on the brink of "financial obesity", new figures reveal.
According to the new Lloyds TSB Bank Mass Index (£BMI), only 42 per cent of Brits are "financially fit", while four in ten people admit they have no savings.
Based on respondents' answers to a set of questions about savings, investments, pensions, home ownership and levels of unsecured debt, the £BMI calculates financial health by awarding points - the lower the score, the fitter respondents' finances were deemed to be.
Those aged 18 to 24 were the most finacially obese, scoring an average of 31, while those over 55 secured a much more hale 24.
The results also showed that women are in worse financial shape than men - they scored on average 28, compared with men's score of 27.
"Most of us know our Body Mass Index, but our financial health seems to be less of a priority," commented Ian Larkin, Lloyds TSB's managing director of consumer banking.
