PayPal makes Valentine's gift predictions - 11/02/2008
|
What people want to get on Valentine's - and what they actually will get - are two very different things, PayPal said today.
According to the online payments firm, through which debit or credit card payments are made, romantic Brits' most hoped-for gifts are a weekend away or 'a surprise'.
While 27 per cent apiece plumped for one of these Valentine's presents, just 10 per cent pined most for a traditional greetings card to mark the occasion.
However, when PayPal measured what people would actually receive, Valentine's cards came top on 69 per cent for singletons and 74 per cent for those in a relationship.
Flowers and romantic dinners came next, scoring an average of around 50 per cent apiece - perhaps showing that the credit crunch has cut back on Britons' spending for their special someones.
Putting a positive spin on things, PayPal spokesperson Cristina Hoole said: "Its nice to see that Brits really are hopeless romantics, who don't want to just be dazzled by expensive chocolates and flashy gifts on Valentines Day.
"It seems it is still the simple things that work, and what we all want - even if we are single or as part of a couple - is to spend the evening with the person we love."
