Celebrity status impacts on car insurance - 26/11/2007
|
New research from elephant.co.uk has revealed that celebrities face far higher car insurance premiums than the average citizen.
The car insurance comparison website cited former Big Brother contestant Brian Belo as an example, noting that he pays 40 per cent more for his car insurance premiums than he did when he was a data-entry clerk.
In recognition of the growing number of people finding fame through reality TV shows or by marrying a well-to-do spouses, elephant.co.uk has now added 'celebrity' as an occupation on its car insurance form.
Managing director Brian Martin said that the new addition was necessary given the increasing numbers of people who make a living solely out of being in the public eye.
He added that the firm "wanted to point out that being famous does also have its downsides and often there's a price to pay for such fame".
One potential risk associated with insuring a celebrity comes from the high-speed paparazzi chases they attract, with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman both complaining this week of being hounded in potentially calamitous breakneck pursuits.
