A survey by the Citizens Advice Bureau has revealed that the charity is receiving an increased number of calls from people with concerns over mortgage arrears, household bills and overdrafts.
The survey showed that mortgage queries have risen by 35% in the last twelve months and that there were 215'000 more debt problems related to household bills than last year.
The number queries regarding credit cards have dropped however, with CAB reporting a 9% reduction in calls linked to this type of borrowing.
Debt is the biggest area of concern for the charity. Almost a third of the 5.7m problems that its staff dealt with in 2006-2007 were debt related.
“It is a worrying trend that our bureau are reporting very sharp increase in the number of mortgage arrears problems they are dealing with” said CAB director of policy, Teresa Perchard.
Similar research by credit reference agency, Experian, has shown that residents of Kingston-upon-Thames are the most indebted. Dumfries is the least indebted area of Britain .
