As Christmas approaches, online shoppers are being warned to ensure they take adequate safety precautions when providing their personal details online.
Industry experts at PC Tools believe that this is the worst time for credit card fraud as they expect that attempted hacks, the spread of malicious software and viruses will be at its worst on Monday.
The Christmas season is the best time for hackers and fraudsters to steal credit card details as this is the time of year when internet traffic is at its highest. Internet shoppers are being advised to check that the website is secure before providing personal details.
According to a prediction by the UK payment association, Apacs, 42 per cent of Brits will do more shopping online this year than last this Christmas.
More shoppers may also be searching for better deals and offers during the downturn of the current UK economy.
They have been advised to ensure the site is safe as this is also the season for fraudsters to create fake websites selling goods which they have no intention to deliver.
Earlier this month, Visa announced the launch of a credit card with an LCD to ensure extra protection for online shoppers.
Customers would have to type their pin in on the card which would then reveal a security code which is needed to authorise and approve the purchase.
Sandra Alzetta, of Visa said: “We saw a big rise in online shopping, but consumers were still worried about fraud… We hope this new card will help allay those fears, and give consumers more confidence when shopping online.”
The card is to be tested in Britain early next year.
