A London anti-terrorism officer has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for illegally charging items worth more than £73,000 to the Metropolitan Police’s credit card exclusively meant for work-related expenses.
39-year-old Det Sgt Richard de Cadenet was said to have spent the amount on the force’s American Express card on personal effects like clothes, electrical gadgets and even holidays.
Until his resignation in April, he worked on the 77 bombing inquiry.
He admitted one count of misfeasance as he appeared before Southwark Crown Court.
Although it was required that officers submitted their details of monthly expenses, it was reported that de Cadenet failed to do so.
The officer, who joined the force in 1996 after serving in the RAF in the Gulf and Bosnia, was arrested after auditors found a list of unexplained transactions.
He was reportedly said to have made cash withdrawals of more than £18,000 and that the card paid for a corporate box at a Premier League football ground, used by his estranged father etc.
