Credit reference agency Experian has revealed the areas of Scotland in which identity theft is most prevalent.
The research showed that the main groups targeted included those making over £50,000 a year and those in rented accommodation. Residents of the G5 8 postcode are at greater risk of identity fraud than any other area in Scotland. The residents there are 4 times more likely to fall victim to the crime than the average Scot. Experian explain that this is because of a high number of the residents fitting the specific targeted groups.
Consumers have been warned to monitor their personal credit report, to keep track of missing mail and destroy all financial documents before throwing them away.
The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos) told the Sunday Herald:
"We are working together with a range of partners to ensure that the threat of fraud is tackled. The Scottish Police Service has a range of responses to all aspects of crime including fraud and any recommendations as to how these can be improved will be carefully considered. All aspects of fraud are carefully monitored and investigated."
