A third of British people prefer to use their credit card instead of cash, revealed a recent survey.
Finance website, Fool.co.uk, conducted the research and found that only 29 per cent use actual money to pay with purchases. Approximately 30 per cent had under £10 on them although amounts of cash carried depended on age and gender.
Those over 55 had more cash on them than 18 to 24 year olds who on average carried £14 in cash. Women had less than half the amount of money than men who generally had £40 in their wallets.
David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, said: "Plastic can be fantastic,
Since you are not paying in cash, it is all the more reason to take care as credit becomes more difficult to obtain."
Mr Kuo urges credit card users to ensure they have a sufficient savings to backup the reliance and heavy use of plastic.
"One day when you need to pull a rabbit out of the hat, you could find that all you have is a dead duck in your pocket," adds Mr Kuo.
