People should read their provider's small print before applying for a credit card, charity Credit Action has said.
Many consumers attracted by the card's headline rate, it suggested, are not paying attention to some of the hidden costs contained in the provider's terms and conditions.
Considerable consumer passivity has already been detected by the Office of Fair Trading on the matter.
The body recently found that 70 per cent of British credit card holders do not shop around for the best deal prior to taking out a card - missing out on big potential savings.
Director at Credit Action Chris Tapp advised: "The big thing to look for is to make sure you understand whatever kind of product you are getting. So before you sign up for anything make sure you understand what the different charges will be.
"Make sure you understand the whole product and the principle when searching for credit cards is, wherever possible, make sure that what you are borrowing on the card you can afford to pay off the next month. That is the way to avoid getting hit with all kinds of charges."
