Cash back cards get warm words from Defaqto - 28/02/2008

Some cash back cards represent a good deal for consumers, data firm Defaqto claimed yesterday.
The credit card sector as a whole has suffered from bad publicity in recent times, especially regarding Egg's decision to cut off 161,000 of its customers.
According to the provider, the accounts were cancelled due to the customers representing a particularly high 'credit risk', although this has been disputed by some consumers.
Cash back cards offer services such as air miles and petrol payments, as well as money, through regular use of the card.
Principal banking consultant at Defaqto David Black said: "There are a variety of reward based credit card schemes and these include points schemes, air miles and cash backs.
"Some of them can be very difficult to compare and, certainly in the case of cash backs, it's worth reviewing what's available on a regular basis, as the best offers often gain that position by virtue of a short-term introductory enhanced rate."
Abbey's cash back card - which offers five per cent back for every £1,000 spent at supermarkets - was singled out as an especially good deal, as was Citibank's Shell MasterCard.
