People can become confused when they hold multiple credit cards, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) said yesterday.
The comments come in the wake of a poll from researchers Datapoint, which found that Britons were more likely than other Europeans to hold more than one piece of plastic.
In fact, the study found that the British credit card average (1.4 per person) was more than twice as high as the second-placed country, Norway.
The UK also led the pack when it came to overall numbers of debit and credit cards held per person.
CCCS spokesman James Ketchell said: "People might have one for work, for example, or you could have one which has got a transfer balance on it with a low interest rate, and then another one for purchases and that kind of thing.
"But it can become confusing and people really have to stay on top of their credit card spending and their finances as a whole really."
