Apacs issues Christmas cards figures - 07/02/2008
|
Festive sales put on plastic cards grew more slowly in 2007 than in previous years, figures from Apacs showed today.
According to the payments association, total plastic spending for the season hit £32.2 billion, up four per cent on 2006's figure.
This equates to 263 card transactions being processed every second in December.
Debit card spending grew by 7 per cent to £20.9 billion - just under half of the 2005/06 increase.
Credit card spending - including poor credit cards - fell for the second year running last year, dropping from £11.4 billion to £11.3 billion.
Director of communications at Apacs Sandra Quinn said: "It appears that the rapid pace of growth in our festive spending is starting to slow."
Commenting on the drop in credit card sales, she added: "People increasingly [opt] to use their debit card rather than credit card; reflecting that people are thinking more carefully about whether they can afford to borrow."
