Overspending on gold credit cards - and generating a poor credit rating - can seriously affect young people's job prospects, Equifax said today.
According to the credit checking service, applications can be affected as well as finances by defaulting on payments.
A recent study of UK students from Equifax found high levels of financial irresponsibility.
Just over one - fifth (22 per cent) said that they did not know how much they spent each month until they received their monthly bank and credit card statements.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, said: "The first thing to do when you come out of university or college, and you're looking at possibly needing credit, is to get a copy of your file and see what's on there."
"There may be some jobs which are financially based or have other sensitivities, where an employer may ask you if you can check your credit file - so again, it's not just for credit, [credit history] may affect job applications and the like."
