Problems with credit cards have dropped by nine per cent reveal figures from a charity.
The Citizens Advice statistics show an increase in overdraft related enquiries which have risen seven per cent. The charity also reported a rise of 35 per cent from home-owners concerned about not meeting their mortgage repayments.
A rise in daily living expenses is thought to be partly to blame.
Theresa Perchard, director of policy at Citizens Advice, said: "These latest figures paint a worrying picture, suggesting a significant number of households are struggling to meet their most basic living costs."
The combination of big increases in household bills, especially fuel, and rising housing costs was putting additional pressure on people's finances when they were already stretched to the limit she added.
The charity had dealt with 215,000 new debt problems in the first two months of 2008 and last year helped 1.7 million people.
Ms Perchard said: "If people have debt problems they should get help straight away."
