Car Insurance - Find car insurance deals for young driver

You've passed your driving test and now you're on the lookout for a new car. The excitement of getting out there and finding the one of your dreams is soured by the grim reality of the cost to get it and you on the road. In the UK it's illegal to drive without having a Third Party insurance policy which covers loss or damage to other people and their property. These rules apply regardless of age, yet more and more drivers between the ages of 17-24 break the law by not acquiring the correct insurance cover or any at all. Many don't realise the seriousness of not having insurance or the correct cover until it's too late. Penalties can include a loss of licence and at minimum a hefty fine. To insure peace of mind and financial coverage young drivers should take the time to attain the correct insurance policy to cover their needs and not break the bank.

As we know purchasing car insurance is pricey, but for the younger driver it's just another hurdle to getting on the road. The higher costs are determined by on-road experience and unfortunately for younger drivers, their lack of it dramatically increases associated costs. Insurance companies calculate the risk of insuring you against the likelihood of a claim. With statistics showing drivers in the 17 to 24 age range are responsible for a third of all road accidents, insurers need to offset the risk, therefore charging you more.

However there are many ways that you can help yourself get the cheapest car insurance available to you. First it's important to understand that as a young driver you are going to pay more for your insurance, this can't be avoided, but by looking around you can save yourself considerable amounts of money by being smart and doing the research. Below are a few simple tips to keep costs low and get you on the road.

Buy a car with a small engine: Insurers look favourably on drivers who own a car with low engine capacity, especially if you're a younger driver. This is because the risk of accidents caused by smaller cars is lower than those with bigger engines. Not only will it assist in reducing your car insurance and your premiums they're cheaper to run too!

Complete the Pass Plus Course : Drivers who have completed this course can save up to 30% on their car insurance. It's a series of six practical modules which get you driving in all road conditions. For younger drivers not only can this be a massive saving it's a great way to gain valuable road experience.

Do not be tempted to add modifications to your car : Although additions may be tempting you need to be aware many insurance policies can be deemed invalid if you do not notify your insurer of any changes you make. Many companies will not cover cars with modifications or will likely charge a lot more for their cover. Avoid making any changes if insuring for the first time.

Build up your no claim bonus: For younger drivers a no claims bonus can prove highly beneficial in the long run, by building up your bonus' you are more likely to be entitled to discounts and lower premiums in the future. Try to find a reduced bonus scheme like the ‘starter policy', which is a six-month option, that helps build your no claim bonus' quicker.

Adding an experienced driver to you policy : Although adding a mature driver to your policy can lower prices it is not recommended. If you are going to insure the car in your parents' names and then be listed as an occasional driver be aware that if you need to make a claim your policy may be voided. Make sure you check the fine print before proceeding with this option.

Voluntary excess : If you elect to increase the level of voluntary excess paid by you (this is in addition to the excess charged by insurers) your premiums can be reduced. Be aware though that as a younger driver your excess payments will already be higher than those paid by mature drivers, ensure the extra cover taken on by you is within your limits.

Install an approved alarm system: As instances of theft, fire and vandalism are higher amongst this lower age group by installing an approved alarm system your insurance costs can be reduced. Contact your insurance provider before proceeding to ensure the alarm system purchased by you is approved by them.

Lower your Mileage: If you know the distance you are likely to drive for the year will be low you can be eligible for discounts from your insurer. This is because by being on the road less your risk of being involved in an accident is also reduced. Try to accurately predict your mileage before applying as you may be charged for going over your estimated distance.

Keep your car secure, lock it up : By parking your car in a garage, off main roads or public access routes you could potentially receive a saving of around 5% off your policy. By housing your car away from areas where damage could occur you are effectively reducing your risk and potential need to make a claim.

Shop around when considering your cover: It's very important to thoroughly shop around before settling on the appropriate cover for you. This allows you to compare companies and the benefits of their cover before choosing a policy. Also before looking decide on the right cover for you, often it is cheaper to purchase extra cover, say Third Party Fire and Theft instead of Third Party only, as more insurers offer this cover and therefore have increased competition to lower their prices. Take into consideration your cost constraints and your personal factors before making any purchase.

With these few tips under your belt, you can now look more confidently for the right car insurance for you. Before making any purchase make sure you are fully aware of any fine print, plus the additional benefits and costs associated and what you will be eligible to claim under your cover. By being educated on your choice you will make a beneficial purchase.
