Parents whose children are insured on their car insurance as named drivers have been advised to amend the details of the insurance policy to reflect the true use of the car.
The advice follows the finding that some parents insure their children on their car whereas the named the drivers are the main drivers who end up taking the car to university.
Reports said such act is regarded by insurers as fronting, which is using fraudulent means or false information to obtain a cheaper car insurance premium.
Fronting, according to the warning by an insurance company, also includes hiding or changing the true user and risk information.
This could backfire in the event of any claims made and the firm therefore called on parents to avoid it.
Meanwhile, a recent survey found that students were increasingly finding it hard to take their cars to university with them because car insurance premiums were rising in cost well beyond their reach.
