A recent study by price comparison site uSwitch.com has found that a lack of knowledge on basic driving theory amongst drivers is causing many of them to make car insurance claims.
33% of the respondents had no knowledge of what the national speed limit is; whilst 58% did not know the correct procedure to use if traffic lights failed. 8% of the respondents got every single question incorrect, whilst, rather worryingly, only 1% got no wrong answers.
Ashton Berkhauer, the company’s insurance expert, claimed that drivers need to be taught and retold the basic rules of the road if the situation is to improve.
He said: "In fact, over 30 million motorists have never been tested on driving theory, suggesting a need for tougher testing. This could lead to fewer accidents, safer roads and lower insurance premiums for all."
Improved testing could help ensure that safer roads are seen in the future, he added.
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly recently met up with insurance insiders to discuss the possibility of more advanced tests.
