Increasing numbers of motorists are 'going green' with their car choices, research from car insurance provider esure shows.
According to the car insurance firm, 42 per cent of UK drivers say that they would buy an environmentally-friendly car such as a hybrid with their next purchase.
The esure poll also revealed that nine per cent of Britons are deliberately delaying buying a car because of their concerns about global warming.
News of the research comes just a day after chancellor Alistair Darling announced plans for a £950 "showroom tax" for purchasers of high-emissions vehicles.
Head of risk and underwriting at the firm Mike Pickard said: "As the government continues to incentivise the nation to opt for clean, green vehicles and shun uneconomical 4x4s and gas guzzling cars by introducing a substantial 'showroom tax', attitudes amongst drivers are changing."
He added: "British drivers appear to have seen the 'green' light and are shifting their car buying habits and aspirations to fit with the current, more eco-friendly society."
