AA gives car insurance advice - 26/02/2008

Policyholders should always be sure to call their car insurance firm well in advance of taking their vehicle on holiday, the AA advised yesterday.
According to the car insurance firm, levels of cover vary widely from provider to provider - meaning that some could potentially be left out of pocket if they get involved in an accident overseas.
UK drivers using their cars in Europe are generally only entitled to the legal minimum of cover, which usually consists of third party protection only. Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "If you have comprehensive cover for your car
[there is] no need to tell the insurer when or where you are going.
"Some insurers provide such cover but charge for it, or provide cover free but you need to let them know your travel arrangements; some insurers provide a few days cover but then charge for more [and] some insurers don't provide cover at all." He added: "The message is, call your insurer in good time before you go." Figures from the RAC Foundation show that around three million British motorists go abroad via ferry or the Eurotunnel each year.
