Car Insurance - Older driver hits back in 'fluffy dice' row - 07/02/2008

An 81-year-old Wiltshire driver has hit back at a local policeman's comments over older motorists' allegedly unsafe road use.

PC Michael Bayliss wrote an article for village magazines recently, in which he compared elderly motorists' driving with that of "hot-headed 20-year-olds" - implying that they were responsible for high rates of accidents and car insurance claims.

He also said that, in previous years, "people used to hang up their driving gloves and fluffy dice in their early 60s".

PC Bayliss also commented that drivers should make their own minds up as to when to stop using the road, but added that "if a motorist leaves it too late he or she may be involved in an accident".

However, local motorist John Cronk has now hit back, the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald reports.

He said that he resented the link the police officer made between older drivers and fluffy dice.

"I have never had a parking ticket nor been advised by a police officer that my driving was not in accord with the Highway Code," he added.

"Whilst this record is no guarantee of my future safety on the road I refute absolutely that the record of over-80 drivers equates with that of hot-headed 20-year-olds."
