A handy majority of drivers believe that councils do not do enough to grit icy roads in winter, research from esure has found.
According to the car insurance firm's poll, 20 per cent of drivers had suffered an accident due to cold weather conditions - and 63 per cent wanted to see surfaces in their area gritted more often.
The car insurance provider also said that general accident rates were 31 per cent higher in winter than in summer.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, commented: "It is clear that some local councils could be doing more during winter to ensure all small roads in their area are gritted thoroughly, to help improve the dangerous driving conditions for motorists.
"It is of the utmost importance to be aware of road safety during the winter months and to judge carefully when it is safe to drive - if you feel it's unsafe
then leave your car at home and take public transport instead."
Region by region, Scotland's roads were found to be the most dangerous in the UK by the car insurance firm - with 95 per cent of motorists saying that they feel more confident driving on motorways than on local roads in winter.
However, road surfacing in Wales scored best with just 46 per cent agreeing.
