Experts at TyreSafe have said that road surfacing problems are "causing mayhem" for UK motorists.
The tyre firm said that potholes represented a particular risk to drivers - especially in times of reduced visibility during winter.
TyreSafe's comments follow a damning report into unfilled potholes from the AA.
The association's figures showed that around 12 per cent of Britain's one million holes were set to remain unfilled because councils could not pay to fix them.
In turn, accidents and damage caused by the potholes could prove a major headache for car insurance firms and car insurance customers alike.
TyreSafe said that damage to tyres was also caused by the unrepaired holes.
"One method of reducing damage to tyres caused by potholes is to maintain them at the levels of pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer," it said in a statement.
"If any level of damage is suspected, motorists should visit their nearest dealer or tyre retailer for their tyres to be examined for any faults."
