Potholes 'left unfilled by cash-strapped councils' - 29/01/2008

Unfilled pot holes on UK roads are posing a big safety threat, car insurance provider the AA has said.
According to the firm, around 120,000 of the holes are left unprepared each year - forming a potential safety hazard for motorists and members of the public alike.
Moreover, the AA says that local authorities are strapped for repair funds, which means that 12 per cent of the UK's one million potholes will remain unfilled.
Ironically, the soaring costs of no-win, no-fee lawyers pursuing compensation claims against councils were cited as a reason behind the pothole problem.
Figures show that councils spent £56 million on filling in the holes in 2007, but ran out of funding following £50 million of compensation payouts, the Times reports.
Commenting on the findings, Edmund King at the AA said: "The pothole problem is reaching a crisis point. They are at the top of road users' concerns.
"It is worrying that although they are tipping off local authorities about this damage it is not being given the importance or priority that it should be."
