Car Insurance - Kwik-Fit: Service station tyre gauges are untrustworthy - 15/01/2008

Faulty or inaccurate tyre stations at petrol station forecourts could be causing an upswing in car insurance claims, if a new report from Kwik-Fit is to be believed.

According to the high street tyre fitters, around 39 per cent of service station gauges are either damaged, out of order or give untrustworthy readings.

As a result, Kwik-Fit claims, five million British drivers have incorrectly inflated car tyres.

Under-inflated tyres can lead to tyre blowouts, tread damage and loss of grip - leading to accidents and, consequently, car insurance claims.

David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, commented: "You might well be forgiven for expecting the gauge on your local garage forecourt to be accurate and in working condition, but seemingly this is not the case."

He added: "Under-inflated tyres can lead to a blow-out: motorists that have had this happen to them will know it is an extremely alarming situation to be in and has the potential to cause a serious accident."
