RAC: Families hit by car costs - 20/12/2007
|
Rising car costs might hit family reunion plans, the RAC has warned.
According to a poll from the organisation, 58 per cent of UK drivers feel that they are "less likely" to make the journey to visit their kith and kin due to the expense involved.
High wholesale prices has led to pump prices topping £1 per litre across the country.
A poll from the AA earlier this year also revealed that car insurance premiums are rising by about ten per cent per year on average.
What's more, petrol costs will rise still further next April due to the government's plan to add 2p onto fuel duty.
RAC spokesman Neil Thompson said: "With motorists having to pay around 10p more per litre than last Christmas, it's unsurprising that they're seeking alternative travel arrangements - or not travelling at all."
The expense of buying petrol at the pump prompted hauliers' pressure group Transaction 2007 to blockade several UK oil refineries last weekend as a non-violent protest.
