AA: 4x4s' popularity on the decline - 10/12/2007
|
The desire to own expensive 4x4 vehicles is petering out among UK motorists, new research from the AA claims.
According to the AA research, part of its Deals on Wheels study, the percentage of people intending to buy a 4x4 has halved from nine per cent to four per cent over the past year.
Low fuel efficiency, high showroom prices and big car insurance costs all contribute towards making the off-roaders a poor option in the current economic climate.
The credit crunch, £1-per-litre petrol and a ten per cent annual rise in car insurance prices have all upped the financial pressure on potential high-end vehicle purchasers.
Mark Huggins, managing director of AA Personal Loans says: "Our research shows that Britons are putting practicality and cost first.
"The environmental impact, running costs and practicality appear to be growing concern."
Indeed, the AA survey showed that mechanical reliability (32 per cent) and cheap car costs (28 per cent) are currently the two biggest concerns for prospective UK buyers.
