The AA has given advice to customers caught up in car insurance mix-ups.
Drivers who are stopped by police and asked for their insurance details are expected to provide them.
Police stop cars through the use of automatic number plate recognition technology, which checks the national insurance database electronically, and flags up those cars who appear on CCTV cameras which are not on the database.
If drivers are found to be driving without car insurance, their vehicles could be confiscated or even crushed - however, some can be caught out by not having their details to hand and not being found on the database due to bureaucratic mix-ups.
Talking to the Scotsman, Ian Crowder, manager at AA insurance, said that drivers can go missing on the database if there is a gap between old policies ending and new details being loaded onto the database.
If the driver is pulled over in this period, he or she is at risk of a mix-up - although Mr Crowder said that there was a remedy to this problem.
"Your insurer will provide you with a policy number and details of your cover when you renew, so make a note of these and your insurer's telephone number, so if you do get stopped you can verify your insurance details to the police," he advised.
