Car owners planning to modify their vehicles do so at the risk of finding it harder to get car insurance, a car modification information portal has said.
The traditional association between car modification and the "boy racer" stereotype of a dangerous driver in his souped-up motor is at the root of this difficulty, Modified Ride claim.
Spokesperson for the information service, Nicholas Seal, said: "As soon as you mention that your car is modified in any way, whether it be alloys or a new engine, most companies do say they are unable to insure you.
"Most insurers do class modified cars as 'high risk' due to the amount of younger drivers who own modified cars wanting to show off," he added.
Young men are also traditionally the group which pays the highest car insurance premiums.
Backing up the view that males pose a bigger car insurance risk is recent research from yesinsurance.co.uk shows that 90 per cent of men admit to exceeding speed limits, with two-thirds saying that they have driven over 100 miles per hour before.
