The government is all set to introduce new speed limit laws, What Car reports.
Currently, motorists caught speeding are fined and given three points on their licence whether they exceed the limit by 15mph or 50mph, but the report says that this would be replaced by a "higher tier" of driver penalties, which would allow for greater differentiation.
In other words, an additional three points over the current speeding penalty would be given if the driver was found going over a still higher speed, set above the speed limit. All fines are to stay the same, however.
In this way, authorities hope, some of the worst speeding excesses would be cut back on, and road safety levels in Britain improved.
New, tougher, legislation might also see a general lowering of car insurance premiums if accident rates were cut.
"Details are still being discussed, but it has been suggested that travelling at 45mph in a 30mph zone would attract a six-point penalty," What Car adds.
Statistics from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people were killed on roads in the UK during 2006.
