Peterborough residents might be hoping for long-term cuts in their car insurance premiums, should a local council boss be proved right.
Graham Murphy, responsible for community safety at Peterborough City Council, says that roadside flower murals, to commemorate people who have died in road deaths, prove a crucial deterrent to dangerous drivers.
Mr Murphy told Peterborough Today that the flowers "send out a strong road safety message "that someone died there. That drivers need to drive carefully and drive according to road conditions.
"The flowers can be a reminder to motorists that someone has lost their loved one on that road, probably, through no fault of their own.
"I think it is a resounding message that goes out, that people need to remember where these places are."
The councillor's comments follow a previous incident in the city, in which a local couple expressed their displeasure that floral tributes to their son, Ryan McNeill, had been unceremoniously cleared away by council workers.
Kerrie McNeill said at the time: "We are fuming that this has happened."
