Direct Line car insurance has issued advice to young drivers who want to cut down on their car insurance premiums.
As insurance is based on risk - and young drivers traditionally cause a proportionally higher number of road accidents - under-25s pay more for their car insurance.
"Things you can do include buying a car with a smaller engine - older cars and bigger engines tend to be more expensive too - and keep your mileage down," a Direct Line spokesperson said.
In the most recent car insurance premiums index from Sainsbury's, released earlier this week, it was revealed that drivers under-25 pay on average more than £1,200 for their car insurance, around four times more than the over-40s.
With a yearly rise of 11.2 per cent, the index showed that premiums in this age group were also increasing by the fastest rate.
The spokesperson also suggested that young drivers could take part in the government Plus Pass training, which can cut "35 per cent" off premiums.
"It's worthwhile doing if you are a young driver," she said. "From a financial point of view it makes sense, because the average premium for a young male driver is going to be around the £2,000 mark, so if you divide that by three, you are saving around £600."
