Around 2.3 million British drivers - or one-in-fourteen of the total - say that they have fallen asleep at the wheel, new research claims.
Road safety charity Brake and breakdown service Green Flag carried out the poll - which also revealed that around one-in-100 drivers had slept while driving "between three and ten times" in the past year alone.
The study showed that many drivers are resorting to makeshift measures to stay awake on long motorway journeys, with tactics such as opening the window and turning the radio up commonplace.
Slightly more hearteningly, 70 per cent said that they took regular breaks on long journeys, and tried to get a good night's sleep the night before.
Brake spokeswoman Dianne Ferreira said that the report's results "paint a worrying picture, and have flagged up that sleeping at the wheel is a huge problem.
"We could be dealing with something of drink-driving proportions."
Commenting on the findings, psychologist Professor Cary Cooper laid the blame for the dangerous driving at the door of Britain's hard-working culture.
"Almost five weeks ago the UN released figures showing the UK had the longest working day in the developed world. People are working longer, harder and faster, and feel pressured to keep it up," he said.
"Those in the businesses with a lot of driving can get even more exhausted and worn out, yet still feel they need to maintain the pace."
