Policemen 'risking too much in chases' - 19/09/2007
|
A worrying new report suggests that policemen are taking "needless risks" in high-speed emergency car chases - and are affecting road safety as a result.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which reported on criminal pursuits this week, added that codified regulations for the chases needed to be enforced.
Currently, no consistent set of rules exists across the regional police forces of the UK.
Reflecting the current risk-weighting of car insurance policies, the report also found that most road accidents in Britain involve young male drivers - who are also involved in the proportionally highest number of police chases.
IPCC chairman Nick Hardwick commented: "All of these pursuits are potentially risky and dangerous - for the drivers of the pursued vehicle, other road users and pedestrians and the police drivers themselves."
Responding to the report, the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) has announced that it is to review its current advisory guidelines on the topic - and left open the possibility that they might become compulsory in future.
