Car Insurance - UK's favourite first car revealed - 25/09/2007

  
 
  The Vauxhall Corsa has been revealed as the young driver's car of choice in a new survey.

Conducted by retailer Carcraft, the supermini beat out the Renault Clio to the top spot - outselling it by two to one.

News of smaller, safer cars doing so well in the survey might well be welcomed by road safety campaigners and car insurance firms alike.

Howard Ryder at Carcraft commented: "Image obviously plays a part but then new young drivers also have to think about insurance costs, which can be extremely high when you first start out on the road.

"The Corsa is such a popular choice for a first car because it has street-cred and yet is still fairly cheap to buy and run - there are also so many variants to choose from, there is a style and colour to suit every new driver."

While both sexes preferred the Corsa to all other models, there was a gender split when it came to second and third choices.

Young female drivers chose the Clio and the Ford Fiesta - while young males picked the slightly larger and faster Vauxhall Astra and the Ford Focus.

However, this might in turn be said to be reflected by the higher car insurance premiums paid by young men.
