A "keenie but not greenie" trend has been spotted among UK motorists by Kwik-Fit.
Following its own research, the garage firm has discovered that 4.5 million Brits worry about their car's environmental impact - but do not know enough about improving it.
This, coupled with separate financial concerns such as road safety and rising car insurance costs, appears to have resulted in drivers increasingly ditching their motors.
Over six-in-ten of drivers asked by Kwik-Fit said that they have been walking more at the expense of using their car.
Other "greenie" moves included getting their vehicle serviced more regularly (37 per cent) and using public transport more (35 per cent).
Cycling is also proving an attractive alternative, with 16 per cent turning to the two-wheeled transport.
Head of the garage company's green division Chris Bosworth said: "The current drive towards living cleaner, greener lives has clearly pricked a lot of motoring consciences. But there are many people who we've termed 'keenies' who'd like to reduce their motoring carbon footprint that either don't know where to start or feel that there aren't any viable options for them."
He added: "Clearly there's a real demand for the automotive industry to provide a wider range of green motoring options."
