A new mini-drink drive test could have a significant impact on car insurance premiums.
Known as AlcoSense, the mobile phone-sized pocket breathalyser allows drivers to accurately gauge their blood alcohol levels before setting out on car trips.
In this way, road accidents - and drink-drive deaths - might be cut and car insurance premiums lowered.
Its manufacturers say that the new device, which has gone on sale in the UK, accurately reflects the police test for drink driving.
"Research shows that just four pints of beer or three glasses of wine can take up to 12 hours to leave your system, meaning that if your last drink was at midnight, you could still be over the drink drive limit at 10am," news agency Reuters commented.
The report added: "Police figures show that worryingly, out of 100,000 breath tests carried out every year, 20 per cent are found to be positive".
The product, which retails for £60, is available at alcosense.co.uk.
