Car insurance firm esure has claimed that one in four Britons going on a ski holiday this winter might not be taking out the appropriate insurance cover.
In a survey carried out by the car insurance company, 27 per cent said that they thought their annual travel policies automatically covered ski-related injuries.
One-quarter (25 per cent) are set to hit the slopes without insurance cover as a result
Hire car safety on unfamiliar foreign roads is also an issue frequently publicised by insurance companies - a problem which might also be encountered by the 3 million Britons going abroad to ski this year.
Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at the firm, said: "Any winter sports holiday comes with a certain element of risk. Whether on a nursery slope or a black run, accidents do happen and its crucial to have medical cover to avoid footing a hefty bill.
"With the rise in high-adrenaline, adventure sports - such as heli-skiing and ice-lake diving - it's also important to check the insurance small print before booking and be mindful of any exclusions."
Other findings from the survey included the revelation that 17 per cent of UK adults would attempt extreme sports such as off-piste snowboarding and tobogganing even with the information that they were not covered by their insurance policies.
