Car Insurance - Fireworks safety out of date with Britons - 24/10/2007

With nearly five and a half million UK households planning to celebrate bonfire night at their homes this year, a new report reveals that almost a quarter of homeowners do not know how to properly handle explosives.

A study by car insurance provider Churchill found that nearly 57 per cent of older teens admitted to being unaware of the Fireworks Code.
Some of the rules in the Fireworks Code warn to "never" throw fireworks, "never" use a naked flame to ignite fireworks and "never" to put them in your pocket.

The study found that despite these strong warnings, nearly eight percent of UK homes have been damaged from fireworks at an average cost of £307 to homeowners for repairs.

The home and car insurance provider advised that people take precautions before celebrating this season such as keeping fireworks in a sealed box or tin.

Retailers should also make sure that fireworks sold comply with BS 7114 and are clearly marked for "Indoor, Garden or Display", Churchill said.
