The clocks going back on October 28th could spell bad news for people - with car accidents, malicious damage, theft and fire are all expected to increase due to the darker evenings, according to a study by car insurance provider Norwich Union.
Holidays in the UK such as Guy Fawkes' Night and Halloween, which fall after the time change, are expected to see higher than normal incidents of malicious damage to cars and homes as well as theft.
Norwich Union said that Guy Fawkes' Night is expected to be the worst day of the year for malicious damage to cars as people reported to make 1.4 times more claims on their car insurance on this night than any other.
Halloween is considered to be the third worst day of the year for malicious damage to cars as claims are double the normal amount on this day, while damage to homes on this day has been shown to increase by 150 per cent.
Simon Warsop, head of statistics at Norwich Union, said: "This weekend heralds the onset of long winter nights. But that doesn't mean you need to be caught out in the cold.
"Extra caution behind the wheel and some common sense tips for home security and safety will help ensure you enjoy everything the season has to offer."
